Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly preparing for Xabi Alonso’s departure in the summer.

Alonso is one of the most sought-after coaches in world football after a hugely successful season with Bayer Leverkusen in which they won the Bundesliga title undefeated.

The German team also won the DFB-Pokal and reached the final of the Europa League, where they were defeated by Atalanta.

Alonso turned down the opportunity to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool to stay at Leverkusen.

The 42-year-old’s current contract with the German team ends at the end of the 2025-26 season, but he is expected to leave next summer, according to Heaven Germany.

Manchester City are said to be showing particular interest in Alonso, with Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad still uncertain.

Guardiola’s contract with City expires at the end of the season and he has not yet committed his long-term future to the club.

Alonso is also a candidate for former club Real Madrid despite Carlo Ancelotti’s current contract ending in 2026.

The Spaniard played 236 times for the La Liga giants and was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2014.

Leverkusen are already searching for Alonso’s successor, with Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness and Germany assistant manager Sandro Wagner among those considered.
