Argonauts, Chad Kelly settle lawsuit from former employee

The Toronto Argonauts and quarterback Chad Kelly reportedly reached a settlement in the lawsuit that led to Kelly’s suspension from the CFL.

Via CBC.ca, the case was resolved through mediation.

The former Argonauts employee was an assistant strength and conditioning coach. She had sought $80,000 from Kelly, $85,714 from the team and $10,000 in punitive damages. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Mediation is a non-binding process in which a third party presides over discussions to reach an agreement. More and more courts are requiring the parties to submit to the effort, which translates into a significant number of resolutions.

A lawsuit-driven investigation resulted in a minimum nine-game suspension for Kelly. Last month he withdrew from the team’s training camp.

Kelly, who spent time with the Broncos and Colts, was named the CFL’s equivalent of MVP last year, leading Toronto to a 16-2 record in the regular season. He is the nephew of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.
