Australia’s leading figures from the worlds of entertainment, politics and business have gathered to celebrate a major milestone for a newspaper.

The Australian held its 60th anniversary party at the Australian Museum, opposite Sydney’s Hyde Park, on Thursday night.

The event was hosted by NewsCorp chairman Lachlan Murdoch, although his father and company founder Rupert Murdoch was conspicuously absent.

The media mogul recently cancelled his plans to attend the event and the reason is understood to be unrelated to health.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was the keynote speaker and led a host of past and present political guests from both sides of parliament.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was accompanied by his wife Kirilly, who dazzled in a bright green dress.

Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jacinta Price stole the show in a vibrant pink dress as she arrived with husband Colin Lillie.

The couple smiled broadly for the cameras before entering the packed venue to mingle with other guests.

Other notable attendees included Australian of the Year Professor Richard Scolyer and Federal Court Judge Michael Lee.

During his speech, Lachlan Murdoch warned that business faces threats from the rapid growth of technology, reported The Australian.

She also praised her father for creating a newspaper that declared its guiding light to be “faith in Australia and the future of the country” and “speaking out without fear”.

“My father’s ambition for The Australian has never been a secret. In fact, he put it on the front page that first day,” she said.

It was essentially about optimism and ambition for our country. It would contain “unbiased information” and “independent thinking.”
