Alphonso Davies spectacularly attempted a Panenka with the game on the line – and missed – as Uruguay defeated Canada in the Copa America third-place match.

The sides were tied 2-2 after 90 minutes, with Luis Suarez levelling the scores in second-half stoppage time, before Bayern Munich star Davies found his side 4-3 down in the ensuing penalty shoot-out.

The left-footed strike sent Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet diving to his right as he chipped the ball into the middle, but his shot hit the crossbar and bounced off the goal line to end the match.

Davies put his hands on his head as he reacted to his mistake and the end of the tournament in Canada.

Despite a disappointing end to their Copa America, Jesse Marsch’s side exceeded expectations by advancing to the semi-finals and escaping a group with Chile and Peru.

They subsequently beat Venezuela on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina 2-0 for the second time in the competition.

Marsch, who is American, said he had “no interest” in taking over as U.S. men’s national coach following the firing of Gregg Berhalter this week.

The former Leeds United and RB Leipzig manager interviewed for the job after the 2022 World Cup, but US Soccer opted to re-hire Berhalter.

He previously said he was “not treated very well” during the USMNT interview process.

Uruguay, meanwhile, eliminated Brazil in the quarter-finals on penalties before losing 1-0 to Colombia in the semi-finals.

The match for third place began with Uruguay’s opening goal from Rodrigo Bencantur in the eighth minute, before Canada’s Ismael Kone levelled the score with a stunning volley from a corner in the 22nd minute.

Jonathan David appeared to have given Canada the win with a rebound in the 80th minute before Suarez broke Canadian hearts by converting a Jose Gimenez cross in the dying moments of the match.

Top scorer Kone then missed in the shoot-out before Davies also missed his lines to hand Uruguay victory.

The winner of the tournament will be decided on Sunday when Argentina and Colombia face each other in the final.

Lionel Messi has not been at his best during the tournament, having not scored until Argentina’s semi-final win over Canada.

However, his teammates in a strong La Albiceleste squad have done plenty to help Lautaro Martinez lead the race for the golden boot with four goals.
