Australians have praised Specsavers for a clever ad designed to trick airline passengers into thinking they have boarded a plane to the wrong city.

The words ‘Welcome to Melbourne’ on a green background are currently displayed on a giant LED screen in the arrivals area of Sydney Airport.

In a smaller text below, the The company’s popular slogan “I should have gone to Specsavers” reassures travellers that they are in the right city.

The funny ad was applauded on social media as commentators wondered if a similar ad had been released in other cities.

“Every time I fly and see this it makes me laugh,” wrote one.

“This is so funny. I wonder what they have in other cities like Brisbane or Adelaide,” wrote another person.

A third shared: ‘There was a sign saying ‘Welcome to Adelaide’ on the road out of Perth Airport earlier this week.’

Others said the announcement would be the last thing they wanted to see after a long flight.

“Don’t worry, you’ll know you’re at the right airport if you can take a train directly from the terminal for an exorbitant surcharge,” one said.

The Australians confirmed that there are similar announcements at other Australian airports.

A traveller recently saw the same advertisement on a luggage carousel in Melbourne, which read: “Welcome to Sydney.”

The announcement was equally praised after a photo was shared online.
