Tesla has posted a second consecutive drop in quarterly sales as it faces fierce competition from China.

The US electric carmaker, led by Elon Musk, delivered 443,956 vehicles in the three months to the end of June.

This figure is 5 percent less than in the same period in 2023 and follows a 9 percent drop in the first quarter of the year.

It was the first consecutive quarterly sales decline since 2012. However, sales were slightly stronger than analysts had forecast.

This also puts it ahead of its closest Chinese rival, BYD.

BYD sold 426,039 vehicles in the three months to the end of June.

The company surpassed Tesla in the last quarter of 2023 when it sold 526,409 electric vehicles compared to Tesla’s 484,507.
