Police in Mallorca have arrested an Italian man on suspicion of raping a British woman on a beach near Magaluf.
The 20-year-old was arrested after the victim complained that he had forced himself on her after a night out in Palmanova, near the famous tourist resort.
The alleged victim, 38 years old, is a vacationer, according to sources close to the investigation.
Those sources confirmed today that the alleged rape had occurred in the early hours of April 11, but the arrest did not take place until three days later, after detectives took a witness statement and viewed CCTV footage.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard of Mallorca stated today: “The Civil Guard of Calvià has arrested a 20-year-old Italian man as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of sexual assault against a 38-year-old woman.
‘Last week, the alleged victim and the suspect met at a night bar in Palmanova.
‘When the bar closed, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the woman’s state of disorientation due to the amount of alcohol she had drunk, to take her to the beach and rape her.
“The agents began an investigation and managed to identify and locate the alleged criminal.”

The unnamed Italian was released on bail by an investigating judge following a subsequent court appearance.
The criminal investigation is ongoing and the judge is awaiting the results of new evidence.
News of the case comes just a day after it emerged that Portuguese police had arrested a 47-year-old masseuse accused of raping a 71-year-old British pensioner in the Algarve town of Quarteira.
A spokesperson for Portugal’s Judicial Police said: “Last Friday, the Judicial Police arrested a 47-year-old man strongly suspected of raping a 71-year-old foreigner at a massage center in the municipality of Loule.
‘The alleged victim reported the incident which police discovered had allegedly occurred after a massage session.
‘As a result of the investigation, carried out by the Southern Directorate of the PJ, the agents were able to collect some very relevant evidence.’
