An eight-month-old baby girl was rushed to hospital following her own funeral after horrified mourners noticed her moving her hand inside her coffin, adding to the misery experienced by her bereaved parents.

Kiara Crislayne de Moura dos Santos was admitted to the Faustino Riscarolli Hospital in Correia Pinto, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, in the early hours of October 19.

Doctors eventually determined that the girl was not breathing or having a heartbeat and pronounced her dead shortly after being admitted.

Just two hours after Kiara was declared dead, funeral director Aureo Arruda Ramos collected her body from the morgue and with Kiara’s parents began the somber task of making preparations for Kiara’s funeral that same day.

The funeral began at 7 p.m. that same day, but the service was abruptly stopped when an attendant noticed the baby’s hand moving in his open coffin.

When a mourner ran to the coffin and touched the baby’s hand, her fingers allegedly curled, sparking a mad rush to get vital help for the baby in the hope that she could be saved.

Firefighter paramedics responded to the service and found that the baby still had a pulse.

They also found no traces of rigor mortis, which usually hardens the body six to eight hours after death.

Her oxygen saturation level was 84 percent, well below the 90 percent threshold that is considered a serious health problem, and paramedics rushed her to the hospital.

But by the time Kiara returned to care, her heart had stopped again and she was pronounced dead for the second time in less than 24 hours.

His heartbroken father, Cristiano Santos, told Brazilian media: “We were already devastated.” Then there was a little bit of hope, but eventually this ended up happening.”

The hospital, which now faces an investigation by Brazil’s specialized Scientific Police, admitted that they had declared that the girl had died 16 hours before her pulse was discovered at her funeral.

The same hospital later reconfirmed the death, when the child was returned again.

The Municipality of Correia Pinto subsequently apologized to Kiara’s family and promised a full investigation with a report within 30 days.

A spokesperson said: ‘The Municipality of Correia Pinto reiterates its commitment to providing the best care to all citizens and reinforces that, under no circumstances, can any professional issue certificates or statements without proper authentication of the patient’s status.

‘In addition, all health professionals are constantly oriented and trained, ensuring that people’s lives and well-being are always the priority.’

It is currently unclear whether Kiara’s parents intend to take legal action against the hospital.
