On the anniversary of his appointment at Molineux, O’Neil has been rewarded for an impressive first season at the club.
O’Neil took over just days before the start of the season following the departure of Julen Lopetegui, calming fan anger and briefly getting Wolves into contention for a European place after they had started the season among the relegation candidates due to a tough financial climate.
Chairman Jeff Shi said: ‘I believe the club has a positive future ahead, building on a new cycle of growth, improved results on the pitch and ambitions to be realised.
‘To prepare for that, we need a very good team and I think Gary is a key member of the team, maybe even the most important member, so we are very happy to have him here for the long term.
‘The team as a whole (Gary, Sporting Director Matt Hobbs, myself and the entire staff) are working closely together to prepare for the new season. Gary is key and we are pleased to have a very young, talented, capable and exceptional coach here.
“He works very hard and is very humble. He is probably the most humble coach I have ever worked with and one of the hardest workers I have ever met. His strengths are tactics and chemistry with players.”
O’Neil’s next challenge will be to reshape a team now without its most potent attacking weapon.
Neto heads to Stamford Bridge in a cash deal worth around £54m, after Wolves rejected cash-plus-player offers from both Chelsea and Tottenham for the 24-year-old.
