The United Left panel on Sunday successfully won the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, defeating its nearest rival, the RSS-affiliated ABVP.
In the polls that took place after a gap of four years, Dhananjay of the All India Students’ Association (AISA) won the post of JNUSU president by polling 2,598 votes against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) Umesh C Ajmeera who polled 1,676 votes achieved.

Dhananjay hails from Gaya, Bihar, and is the first Dalit president from the Left after Batti Lal Bairwa in 1996-97.
Amid shouts of ‘Lal Salaam’ and ‘Jai Bhim’, the winning students were praised by their supporters. Red, white and blue flags were waved by the students to celebrate the candidates’ victory.
Avijit Ghosh of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) defeated Deepika Sharma of ABVP by 927 votes to win the post of vice-president. Avijit Ghosh got 2,409 votes against DeepiksSharma’s 1,482 votes. Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) candidate Priyanshi Arya, who was backed by the Left, won the post of general secretary by defeating ABVP’s Arjun Anand by 926 votes. Arya secured 2,887 votes while Anand got 1,961 votes. United Left extended its support to Arya after the Election Commission withdrew the nomination of its candidate Swati Singh when her candidature was challenged by the ABVP. Mohammad Sajid from the Left won the post of joint secretary by defeating ABVP’s Govind Dangi by 508 votes. His was the lowest win of all four winners.
With the Left panel sweeping the polls, the JNU has lived up to its reputation as a Left bastion. The ABVP offered a neck-and-neck fight and led in the early trends at all four central panel posts.
The United Left panel consists of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF).
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union polls on Friday witnessed a voter turnout of 73 percent, the highest in the last 12 years, according to a comparison with previous years’ data.
