Roy Keane’s damning criticism of Manchester United reached a boiling point when the club legend produced a sensational rant after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea, where he labeled the team “boring” and insisted the current crop of players have the wrong “DNA”.
United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign continued when Moisés Caicedo canceled out Bruno Fernandes’ opener to rescue a point for the Blues at Old Trafford.
The shared spoils leave United 13th in the league table with just 12 points from 10 games and already 13 points behind leaders Liverpool following the sacking of Erik ten Hag earlier in the week.
Ruud van Nistelrooy got his first taste of English top-flight action as caretaker manager against Chelsea and will oversee two more matches before current Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim takes charge.
However, former United captain Keane laid bare the enormous challenge Amorim faces in turning around the club’s fortunes, describing the current team as “average in everything”.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea, Keane fumed on Sky Sports: “This is an average United team. All the statistics back it up. They could have won the game. It’s unpredictable. It’s not good.
‘This United team is almost boring. Really disappointed, so flat. From the coach’s point of view, this team is a long way from being in the top four again. As a team, if we look at certain individuals, we may think they are better than they are.
‘They are average in everything. The lack of goals is still hard to believe. That’s why managers lose their jobs. “It is a true game of chance and it will most likely fail,” he added.
Jamie Redknapp and Frank Lampard echoed similar concerns about United’s future, with the Chelsea icon criticizing the 13-time Premier League champions as “the worst-pressure team in the league”.
Meanwhile, Keane’s annoyance at falling standards at the club he helped turn into a dominant force continued with his assessment of Fernandes’ leadership skills.
The Portuguese playmaker was named captain by Ten Hag at the start of the Dutchman’s second season in charge, but has regularly faced criticism for his on-field behavior and attitude towards referees.
Against Chelsea, Fernandes endured a mixed game as he scored United’s only goal, but he was also involved in several bad-tempered moments and Keane criticized the 30-year-old as if he were no captain.
‘Too little, too late. They are always uncomfortable interviews for players. I don’t think Bruno has shown leadership. “I don’t think he’s done enough as United captain,” Keane said.
Fernandes’ leadership ability was once again questioned as he raged for several moments against Chelsea.

‘I don’t think he should be too proud of himself. The players have disappointed the coach. I’ve played with some great coaches. This idea, when a player says I’m sorry for the coach, is hard to hear. It’s not even about liking the coach,” Keane added.
Keane then further criticized his former club’s culture, continuing: “Your own DNA should suggest you are a good team player.” You roll up your sleeves and try hard. This United team doesn’t. We can’t go back to United in the 80s when they were a cup team.
‘When you look your teammates in the eyes, you show what you do, you go deeper. I wouldn’t want to be in the trenches with those players. My eyes don’t lie to me. It’s not about liking managers.
—That has to depend on your DNA. “A lot of them don’t have the DNA of a Man United player in my eyes,” he said.
