A man was crushed by a 1,200-pound tree stump in suburban Portland, authorities revealed.
The fatal incident occurred Tuesday night, when the unnamed victim attempted to remove the stump from his backyard. Her body has since been recovered.
The man was pinned down overnight before being discovered. Portland Fire & Rescue was able to lift the man’s half-ton stump with a high-angle pulley system, agency officials said, adding that it was too late to save his life.
Once the body was removed, the place was made available to the police, who are now investigating the incident.
In a statement to DailyMail.com, officials confirmed that a malfunction with the owner’s equipment caused the accident, as an investigation is currently underway. The victim, confirmed to be a man, has not yet been identified.

In a statement to KOIN-6, local authorities revealed that the incident occurred sometime on Tuesday, when the owner was working alone to remove the stump.
That’s when his safety equipment suddenly failed, leaving him trapped under the piece of wood, authorities said.
The incident occurred in the Russell neighborhood and police were also spotted at the scene. The victim, confirmed to be a man, has not yet been identified.
The station reported that the person’s spouse was the one who stumbled upon the grisly scene the next morning after walking outside.
