Vice President Kamala Harris currently leads former President Trump by two points in Virginia.
The new findings, conducted by the University of Mary Washington, found that 48 percent of respondents favored Harris, compared to 46 percent for Trump.
Virginians said the economy, jobs and inflation were their top concerns, while the state of democracy was also a top issue.
The university had conducted the poll ahead of the first presidential debate between the two candidates, which was widely seen as a Harris victory.
Virginia, once a Republican stronghold, has recently seen a surge in Democratic strength thanks to President Biden’s victory in the state in 2020.
The new findings, conducted by the University of Mary Washington, found that 48 percent of respondents favored Harris, compared to 46 percent for Trump.
The university had conducted the poll ahead of the first presidential debate between the two candidates, which was widely seen as a victory for Harris.
Stephen J. Farnsworth, a political science professor at the University of Mary Washington, said: “This new poll suggests that Virginia should be watched much more closely by both presidential campaigns.
‘Virginia may deserve to be treated as a “battlefield state” once again this year.
‘Given the varied results of Virginia polls over the past two months, the Harris and Trump campaigns may be paying too little attention to the Commonwealth.
‘The Virginians have a history of going back and forth from game to game.’
Previous presidential results show Biden beating Trump by 10 percentage points in the state in 2020.
Four years later, Hillary Clinton was leading Trump in the state by five percentage points.
The state has supported Democratic presidents since Barack Obama first ran for office in 2008.
The last time a Democrat won the state before Obama was Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1964 election against Barry Goldwater.
A poll conducted by DailyMail.com earlier this week in collaboration with JL Partners highlighted how Harris had now taken the lead over Trump.
Harris is the choice of 43 percent of voters, up two points from the last poll on August 13, while Trump is the favorite with 42 percent, down two points.
JL Partners surveyed 1,000 likely voters using landlines, cellphones, online panels and in-app techniques from Sept. 11-16. The results have a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
Trump has lost 17 points of support, thus eliminating his advantage among a crucial group in several key states.
The shift appears to be driven by huge changes among Hispanic voters. His support among black voters has also been cut in half, from 13 percent to 6 percent.
James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners, said the debate had helped Harris with three key groups since DailyMail.com’s August poll.
“First of all, the independents: among them she now leads Trump by four points,” he said.
‘Secondly, among those aged 50 to 64, where it has reduced a 16-point deficit to just a two-point difference.
‘Third, Hispanic voters, who have dramatically moved away from Trump in recent weeks.
Trump was leading Harris among Hispanic voters in August, but his support has since plummeted.
“It’s hard to say exactly why, but given that the biggest political story of the past month was the debate, it has to have something to do with it.”
Hispanics in particular were a key part of the coalition that propelled Biden to victory four years ago.
And Harris will likely need their votes in Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona to win in November.
He has enjoyed a bonanza in fundraising and polling since he unexpectedly entered the race in July.
There were signs, however, that the honeymoon was ending as his momentum in the polls began to stall.

Against that backdrop, he came to the ABC News debate with something to prove and a plan to get on Trump’s nerves. And it seemed to work.
She wasted no time in mocking his protests, prompting the former president to repeat a wild internet rumor that illegal immigrants were killing and eating pets.
He sometimes raised his voice and seemed distracted from his own plan to focus attention on Harris.
The campaign took a turn last week when police arrested Ryan Routh, 58, after he was spotted at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach in an apparent assassination attempt.
