Marc Cucurella has revealed that a Chelsea teammate tried to clear the air with Erling Haaland after the defender launched a chant about the Manchester City striker.
After being part of the Spain squad that won Euro 2024, Cucurella’s infamous celebrations included a song referencing the Manchester City striker, saying Haaland “trembles” when he sees the Chelsea defender.
But it was the goalscoring giant who had the last laugh last month, when Haaland got past his man to score the first of his campaign and help Manchester City to a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella says the incident was taken “out of context” but insisted he would “do it again” before revealing that Cole Palmer tried to be a peacemaker.
Talking with EfeCucurella said: ‘A lot of attention was given to that (the song) and these things happen.

‘I’m very happy and I think that if someone has a song sung with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, the name of a player who is not known would not be used.
‘Everyone is happy because he scored and I’m still just as happy about winning the Euros. I would do it again, these things happen and that’s it.
‘In the end, in England, they took it out of context a bit and I think he (Haaland) didn’t understand it either.
‘He read what they said and took it a little personally.
‘Nowadays people take things very seriously, but then there were some awards and my partner (Cole) Palmer asked him about me and that was it. It was just an anecdote.’
The whole chant, which Cucurella repeated, says: ‘Cucu, Cucurella, eat paella, Cucu, Cucurella, drink Estrella, Haaland, you better tremble because Cucurella is coming’.
Eagle-eyed fans even noticed that Haaland ignored Cucurella when he suffered cramp during the latter stages of the Chelsea-City match.

Cucurella was desperate for Haaland to help him with a cramp, but he wouldn’t have any part of it.
Asked about Cucurella after the match, the Norwegian said: ‘Well, Cucurella is a funny man.
‘Last season he asked for my shirt… and this summer he’s singing a song about me.’
However, the elder Haaland, Alfie, – speaking to Mail Sport at the PFA Awards – was adamant that his son had taken the chant as good news.
“I think it’s just a bit of fun,” Haaland Sr. said of the chant, which Cucurella sang enthusiastically during his team’s raucous celebrations in Madrid.
“We think he’s a good player and a fun person. It’s just a joke. I think Erling likes it.”
