Manchester United have reportedly offered Chelsea the chance to sign one of their players.

The star was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their opening weekend Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

Enzo Maresca has informed the top professional that he is not part of his plans as he seeks to reduce a bloated squad.

The experienced England international is reportedly weighing up his options and Chelsea will not stand in his way if he wants to leave.

In his late 20s, the star can bring experience to a team and still has years left to operate at the highest level.

The player in question is none other than Ben Chilwell, talkSPORT reports regarding Chelsea’s offer to United.

Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia remain injured, and the left-back position has been problematic for United for long periods last year.

Although Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez could all take his place, it is not their natural position, while 17-year-old Harry Amass is more of a long-term option than a quick fix. Dalot played in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday night.

Coach Maresca has explained that it will be difficult for Chilwell to break into his team, especially with Marc Cucurella in top form.

“With Chilly, he’s a lovely guy, but I said I was going to have problems with his position. If you think that’s brutal, that’s up to you.”

Chelsea have a total of 43 players in their first team with a combined 191 years remaining on their contracts (the most in the league), and Maresca is keen to reduce the numbers.

Maresca admitted that Raheem Sterling and Chilwell are part of group training away from the main squad.

“The situation with both is quite clear,” he said.

‘They are Chelsea players, but it is not possible to give them all the minutes. Those who want minutes, it is better for them to leave.

‘I try to be honest. I spoke to Raheem before the game against Manchester City. I told him that he would struggle to get minutes with us and that was the reason he was out.

Chilwell, 27, was told during the two-week tour of the United States that he is not the right candidate for what Maresca wants from his full-backs.

Speaking ahead of the game against Servette, which Chelsea must beat in both legs to secure their place in the Europa Conference League beyond August, Maresca said: “Brutal? I don’t think so. I’m just trying to be honest.”
