Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the country, Shashi Tharoor, Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate from Thiruvananthapuram constituency in Kerala, on Wednesday teamed up with India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) and launched their campaign targeting new voters.

He said a total of 96.8 crore people have registered to vote. However, the most important fact is that of these, 23 crore people between the ages of 18 and 29 will vote.

Highlighting the role that young people can play in the upcoming general election, he said: “I believe this is an election where young people can truly determine the fate of the country.”

Congratulating IIMUN on its #myfirstvote campaign, he added, “I am happy to do my part to increase the need to vote!”

Earlier in the day, Shashi Tharoor accused the BJP of hijacking democracy and urged other political parties to fight together to defeat it in the upcoming polls.

He argued that the BJP cannot repeat the same performance as in the 2019 general elections when it won 303 seats and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by it won 353 seats.

For the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, both the BJP and the Left have fielded strong candidates against Shashi Tharoor in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency, where he won three times in a row.
