Nelly Korda missed the cut at the Women’s PGA Championship when Sarah Schmelzel and Amy Yang took the joint lead after the second round in Seattle.

World number one Korda shot a nine-over-par 81 in the second round that included a double bogey, eight bogeys (four of which came in the first four holes) and a birdie.

The 25-year-old American, who won the first major of the season and was aiming for her seventh victory of the year, finished at six over par.

“I have no words about how I’m playing right now,” said Korda, who was one shot off the lead in second place after the first round.

“I’m just going to go home and try to reset.

“A lot of things went well at the beginning of the year and I just gave it back.”

American Schmelzel shot a 67 and South Korean Yang a 68 in the second round at Sahalee Country Club to take the top spot at six under par.

Overnight leader Lexi Thompson is in third place at four under after a 72, while Ireland’s Leona Maguire (71) is one shot further back.

Englishman Charley Hull scored a 73 and is one under, while his compatriot Georgia Hall, two up, was the only other Briton to make the cut.

Schmelzel, who has never won an LPGA event, made the last of Friday’s six birdies on the final hole.

“I took a look at the leaderboard at 17 and saw I was ahead,” he said.

“It was nice to be able to finish so well too, knowing I was ahead in a major.”
