Jurgen Klopp reflects on Liverpool’s loss to Real Madrid in 2018 and Loris Karius’ ‘tragic’ night
As Liverpool prepare for Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final, Jurgen Klopp has looked back on their agonizing defeat to this weekend’s opponents in 2018.
The Reds lost 3-1 in Kyiv to Madrid, which won the league for the third year in the bounce, after two errors by goalkeeper Loris Karius led to goals and a world-class overhead kick from Gareth Bale.
Speak with BT SportKlopp has reflected on the heartbreaking defeat, claiming the Reds had some issues in the game and admitting it was a ‘tragic night’ for Karius.

Klopp has opened up on the ‘tragic’ night for Loris Karius, who has not played for them since
“We all agree we played a good final and then this happens,” Klopp said as he watched Karius’ first mistake of the evening.
The German tried to throw the ball out, but Benzema stuck out one leg and kicked the ball into an empty net.
Klopp added: “At this point there were so many things coming together. We had injuries, couldn’t change the way we wanted, players came back from injuries just before the game and had to change.
Karius gave Real Madrid the lead by sending the ball straight to Karim Benzema . to throw
He then botched Bale’s long-distance attempt that effectively sealed the match for Real Madrid
“I think Adam Lallana came in, but in a different position, so these things aren’t helpful in the final.”
Sadio Mane equalized for Liverpool after 55 minutes, before Bale scored a world-class overhead kick to put Madrid back ahead nine minutes later.
Despite his sensational goal that day, Real Madrid fans are not yet warm to the Welshman who will leave the club at the end of the season.
Regarding Bale, Klopp said: “I mean, people in Madrid don’t like him. I would only love him for this goal if I were a Madrid fan, I can’t believe that.’
Klopp then watched on television Karius’ second foul, who fiddled the ball from Bale’s long-range shot into the back of the net.
He said, “And now this one too. We all know that we don’t need to make this story bigger, that was of course a 100% tragic situation.
“Loris Karius is a really good guy and that night it didn’t help that we had to say because everything we do is done in public. The whole world is constantly building an opinion about us, most of the time it’s not important. If people think of me as ‘what an idiot’ or whatever, it’s not a problem because I feel fine.
Gareth Bale is not revered by Real Madrid fans despite his world class goal against Liverpool
“But if you think about yourself, god how could I do it, and the world is going for you, that’s really hard and that was the case for Loris.”
Karius has never played a competitive game for the Reds since then, and despite a few loan spells from the club, he is at Anfield until this summer and is expected to leave.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was eager to play in Real Madrid’s final this year as he is looking for revenge from 2018.
In another crushing moment for the Reds in Kiev, Salah had to leave early after a struggle with Sergio Ramos.
Liverpool are hoping to win their third trophy of the season after winning both the Carabao and the FA Cup.
With the Reds fighting for everything in the final weeks of the season, Madrid were able to relax after winning the LaLiga title with four games to go.
Asked about playing every possible game this season, Klopp said: “It makes it more difficult. What was Madrid champion four weeks ago?

‘A little rotation here, nice weather in Spain, play here for a few minutes, play there for a few minutes. At that time we went for everything, we played a cup final, all the Premier League games were cup finals that we had to win. It is well.
“Normally the reason nobody wins so many trophies every season is because it’s very difficult.
‘We are looking forward to it, I can’t have more energy. It’s incredible, we’re here, we want to go for it and we’re doing really well. We will assemble a team and give them an absolute fight.”
