Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck as Mumbai Indians slumped to their third consecutive defeat against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024 on Monday. Rohit fell victim to Trent Boult on the fifth ball of the MI innings when he finally played away from his body and Sanju Samson took a sharp catch behind the stumps to complete the dismissal. Former England cricket team fast bowler Stuart Broad analyzed the dismissal on Star Sports and said it was a good setup from RR and their celebration showed how much planning went behind the wicket. He also pointed out that Rohit couldn’t have done much about it before adding that the dismissal could lead to the batsman having ‘philosophical’ thoughts.
“That was just fantastic bowling. That was just a wonderful plan by Rajasthan Royals. I think you could tell from the whole group’s celebration that that was intentional. They thought Rohit would think Boult would swing the ball back and you can see from the seam release that he’s wobbling. That means it’s a deliberate move over the right-handed batter with the slip in place and actually a fantastic catch as well. Low to the right are always difficult for a wicketkeeper.”
“I think Rohit would probably be in the dressing room right now, quite philosophical. There’s not much I can do about that, really. It’s not like he played a terrible bat. I think it was fantastic bowling.”
Rohit Sharma on Monday equaled the unwanted record for most ducks in the history of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
In the first over of the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit slid one to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson in Trent Boult’s over, his 17th duck in IPL history, breaking Dinesh Karthik’s dubious record equaled.
Rohit’s record of 17 ducks is followed by Glenn Maxwell, Piyush Chawla, Mandeep Singh and Sunil Narine, who all stepped on ducks 15 times.
The match saw brutal spells from Trent Boult, Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal tear apart the Mumbai Indians (MI) batting order, allowing Rajasthan Royals (RR) to restrict MI to 125/9 in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 here at Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Chahal and Boult played their hearts out against Mumbai, bagging three wickets each, while Nandre Burger returned with two scalps. Captain Hardik Pandya top scored for MI with 34 off 21 deliveries while Tilak Varma played a crucial knock of 32 runs in 29 balls.
Rajasthan Royals bowlers absolutely bossed Mumbai batters as Pandya’s Mumbai-led homecoming did not go according to their plan as far as the team recorded their lowest total in their IPL.
