A Canadian expat has exposed the “ugly” solution Australians have come up with to combat the biting cold in Australia.
Alexandra TuoheyNow living in Victoria, she was shocked when she realised that “the coldest I’d ever felt” was living in a shared house in Melbourne in July, despite coming from Canada, a notoriously frigid country.
“Australian homes are so cold that they invented their own type of clothing to survive the winter: indoor thermal clothing,” he said in an article. video.
“Almost all homes (in Canada) have central heating that is not turned off throughout the winter. However, homes are well insulated, so they retain heat better,” he added.
Alexandra identified three essential items for surviving the Australian winter indoors: an Oodie, Ugg boots and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.
“The Oodie may be the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen put on your body, but it’s vital to surviving the winter,” the expat said.
Oodies are wearable blankets with hoods and a large pouch in the front. This loungewear item is especially useful in Australia, where most homes are colder inside than outside during the winter.
‘(The Oodie) will make you sweat uncontrollably unless you’re in a room where the temperature is 15°C or below, meaning it’s the perfect accessory to ensure you don’t develop pneumonia this Australian winter,’ Alexandra said.

Alexandra said Australians also need to protect their feet from the cold, and that’s where Ugg boots come in.
“As a Canadian, I didn’t understand Ugg boots. They weren’t warm enough to wear outside and my house was hot so I wasn’t going to wear them inside. However, they are the perfect footwear to wear inside a very cold Australian house,” she said.
Alexandra’s third and final winter must-have is the Kathmandu quilted jacket.
“Originally designed for camping or hiking, Australians have repurposed it for use anytime they can’t use their Oodie,” he said.
“So, whether you’re going to work or to someone else’s cold house, the puffer jacket is the most appropriate piece of clothing you can wear.”
John Pabon, an American sustainability consultant from Melbourne, previously told Daily Mail Australia: ‘When Australians complain about their homes being cold in the winter, they’re not just complaining – it’s scientifically proven.
‘The World Health Organisation consistently ranks Australian homes as some of the coldest in the world.
“They have a measurement system that says that for a house to not be cold, the temperature inside it must be above 18°C. But Australian houses don’t meet that criteria.”
Alexandra identified three essential items for surviving an Australian winter indoors: an Oodie, Ugg boots and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.

Many Australians agreed with Alexandra’s assessment.
“Right now I’m wearing my Uggs and my avocado-colored Oodie,” one said.
Another added: “I love my Oodie. They now sell Oodie pants too.”
“The puffer jacket, also known as the Tassie tuxedo. We wear it to work, to funerals… everywhere,” one man wrote.
“I get home from work, take off my Kathmandu puffer jacket and put on my Oodie and Uggs,” another confirmed.
