Newly appointed Broncos coach Michael Maguire has stressed that the welfare of the Uber driver and two passengers involved in the head-on collision with Ezra Mam is at the forefront of his mind, but the club is not backing him.
It comes as Mam, 21, allegedly failed a roadside drug test on October 18 in Brisbane following the car crash.
The fifth-eighth was also allegedly driving without a license at the time.
“I’m not going to touch on that at the moment,” Maguire told a group of journalists on Wednesday when asked if the NRL club would sack Mum.
‘I have to review everything and evaluate what is happening.
‘I will definitely find out how one of our players gets to this point.
‘I have to find out more about what the situation entails. “I’ve spoken to him and it’s more about the safety of everyone involved in the situation.”
Maguire added that he is well aware that “the seriousness of the incident is enormous.”
Broncos coach Michael Maguire has emphasized that the first thing on his mind is the well-being of the Uber driver and the two passengers involved in the head-on collision with Ezra Mam.
Mam (pictured with the ball) reportedly tested positive in a roadside drug test on October 18 in Brisbane following the car crash.
“People get hurt in these situations,” he said. “We also have to take care of the people involved.”
However, the Uber driver of the car involved in the accident said he didn’t hear a word from the Broncos.
Driver Marcel van den Camp claimed he “blacked out for a while” and admitted he was “going to need help to overcome the mental obstacles” after being behind the wheel during the incident.
The mother said her young daughter suffered a broken hip in the collision and both also suffered seat belt burns.
No charges have been filed in the accident.
‘In an instant a truck appeared and ran over us. “It was a tremendous accident and I passed out for a while,” Van Den Camp said. Nine news.
“The lady was saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’ and I said, ‘I have to do something.’
‘I tried the back doors, I couldn’t open them, they were locked, so I went back to my door, reached out to the back door on my side and opened it.

“So I took the girl out, they were both pretty shaken up to say the least.”
‘I haven’t heard anything, nothing from the Brisbane Broncos.
“I’m going to need help to overcome the mental obstacles I’m experiencing, a little bit of anxiety when I’m sitting in the car.”
On Tuesday, the mother of the girl riding in the back of the Uber spoke about the injuries she and her daughter suffered.
“She (her daughter) has a hip fracture… (she also) has very serious burns from the friction of the seat belt,” he told the newspaper Sydney Morning Herald.
Mam’s management issued a statement Monday saying the star is seeking “immediate professional treatment” at a rehabilitation center.
If Mam does not leave Red Hill, the Broncos face the possibility of him being suspended by the NRL for the start of the 2025 season.
Maguire is convinced that accountability is key for Mam.
‘People will make mistakes, but they must also accept them. “That’s the most important thing, if you own where you are,” he said.
‘Your actions in the future are very important. I know you are getting help right now about where you are. ‘When I get over it, I’ll have some time with him.
“It has to go through a process with the police, the game and the (Broncos) themselves…wherever it goes, we’ll move forward with what we have.”
