Neighbors told local press they believe the 79-year-old Colombian may have died of Covid.

One would have raised the alarm because of the strong smell coming from her flat and the number of flies.

Police allowed firefighters to enter the apartment through one of the windows on Monday and found Clara dead in one of the rooms during a subsequent search.

The upper part of her body is said to have been partially eaten by the animals.

The two remaining cats were taken to an animal shelter.

An unnamed neighbor told the Spanish daily El Mundo: “A police officer said this was the worst he had ever seen in his job.”

Clara’s body is believed to have remained undiscovered for about three months, although the results of an autopsy have not yet been released.

She had lived alone in the flat where she was found dead since 1996. Her whole family would live in Colombia.

In September 2019, a dog was found to have survived the death of its cancer-stricken owner by eating part of his body while lying undiscovered in his Madrid flat for about a month.

The dead man reportedly had no meat left on his legs where the animal devoured its lower limbs to stay alive.

A neighbor raised the alarm when she returned from vacation and discovered a rancid smell that she initially mistook for a dead rat.

The dog was sedated before being taken to an animal shelter after police prompted firefighters to break into the ground floor flat in Madrid’s Ciudad Lineal neighborhood and make the gruesome discovery.

Doctors at the time are said to have estimated that the dead man, a 56-year-old prisoner known only as Matias, had died about a month earlier after succumbing to lymphatic cancer.
