Australian basketball star Liz Cambage is back on social media and turning heads once again, this time with an odd choice for her new tattoos.

Cambage just finished a stint as a player in China, where Western social media platforms are banned.

She recently wasted no time connecting with her 1.2 million followers, sharing videos and images of her getting new ink in a very strange place: the palms of her hands.

He had ‘Memento Morí’ tattooed on his left palm, which is Latin for ‘remember that you must die’, and ‘Memento Vivere’ tattooed on his right palm, which means ‘remember that you must live’.

Tattoos on the palms of the hands are rare due to the high level of pain and the rapid regeneration of skin cells, which causes faster fading in that part of the body.

Cambage recently completed a three-month stint with the Sichuan Yuanda women’s team based in the Chinese city of Chengdu, earning more than $1 million for a cameo in the local league.

She also posted a picture of herself getting a beauty treatment on her face with the caption: ‘@ecambige the WINNER is back with a championship! Getting prettified for the next chapter.”

Former Australian Opal has courted controversy throughout her career, including in her recent stint in China, where she was ejected from a game after two flagrant fouls eliminated opposing players.

That cameo came after Cambage was exiled from the Australian team and prevented from playing in the Paris Olympics by Opals coach Sandy Brondello.

Cambage was unable to use Western social media while playing in China, but is now back and active on Instagram, where she has 1.2 million followers.

Tension between Cambage and her former Opals teammates dates back to 2021, when she was accused of racially abusing Nigerian players in a warm-up match ahead of the Olympics, claims she denied.

“I’m pretty upset by all the fake news and lies I see floating around in news articles and being shown and asked about,” she said in an Instagram video at the time.

She also left the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA in difficult circumstances after footage emerged of Nigerian teammates rolling their eyes at her during a press conference.

In 2021, Cambage engaged in a war of words with Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller, who was calling for a foul on the Australian.

Cambage would later post on Instagram: “I will never let a man disrespect me, especially a small white one.”

That same year, Cambage accused the Australian Olympic Committee of a cover-up and lack of diversity following a pre-Games photo shoot for the Australian Olympic Committee’s underwear sponsor.

‘If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, how can I represent a country that doesn’t even represent me? Australia, wake up,” Cambage said on Instagram.

The center has also had a long battle with former NBA and Australian Boomers player Andrew Bogut on social media.

“Mr. Bogut’s obsession with me is so strange that he’s spent like 10 years speaking on my behalf… if you want to tell me that,” Cambage in 2021.
