Donald Trump claimed at a rally that “every place Kamala Harris touched turned into shit,” despite his wife’s pleas for him not to swear.

The former president was attacking his opponent at a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Friday night as he campaigns in the must-win state.

He complained about asylum seekers entering the United States and claimed that “this country is going to fail,” before making the incendiary statement.

“These people who govern our country are stupid. They have no common sense, they believe in an ideology,” he began.

“If you look at Kamala and see what he’s done to her… every place she’s touched has turned to shit. Every place she’s touched.”

Trump turned to his left, away from the microphone, to address someone off-camera, and was heard saying, “I have to say it.”

He turned to the crowd and explained that the Rev. Franklin Graham, a staunch Trump ally, had written him a letter asking him not to swear in his speeches.

“His speeches would be even better if he did not use foul language,” Trump said Graham wrote in his letter.

The Republican candidate added that Melania Trump also told him he should not swear in his speeches, but he found it difficult.

‘My wife also tells me please don’t use foul language, but it’s difficult, you know, there are some words that you can’t duplicate, you can’t,’ he said.

‘But there is an example… well, it’s not really such a bad word, but how can you top that word for what I’m talking about?

‘Won’t every place I touch be pleasant? That would be a thud, it would fall with a thud.

“And Franklin is probably right, I’m not sure I agree with him, but he’s actually a great guy… so I try to avoid him.”

Trump is down 1.4 percent in the average of recent polls in Pennsylvania, a state that could single-handedly decide the outcome of the election.

Prone to attacking his opponents, Trump has used profanity at other rallies, even prompting crowds to chant “nonsense” when he complained about his “hush money” trial.

Trump is not the only candidate to swear during public appearances on the campaign trail, as Harris used the word “f**k” in a speech in May.

The vice president spoke at a summit for Asians, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, and talked about her mixed black and Indian ancestry.

Harris told the audience that young people should not allow others to define them by their ethnicity.

“We have to know that sometimes people will open the door and leave it open, and sometimes they won’t,” he said.

“And then you have to kick that fucking door down,” he said, to loud cheers, before laughing and apologising: “Excuse my language.”

Meena asked him questions about the chicken they were cooking, until Harris finally became exasperated with her.

“Tell me more, tell me more,” her niece pleaded after her aunt explained that she was caramelizing onions, at which point Harris appeared to explode.

“You need to learn how to cook instead of videotaping me. I’m trying to teach you, but you’re more interested in being a video professional,” he said.
