Doctors have warned against “vigorous and prolonged” bedroom antics after treating a patient with a life-threatening injury to his genitals.
The 53-year-old man suffered inflammation in the main vein that runs along the shaft of the penis, which can lead to life-threatening blood clots.
The night before he had a Viagra-fueled session of rough sex that had caused extreme swelling at the bottom of his phallus.
The skin was warm to the touch and “tender,” with a visible bulge as a result of fluid buildup.
The man, who has not been named, was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and made a full recovery within a few weeks, but his doctors are using his case as a cautionary tale.
They say doctors should be careful when prescribing Viagra to patients who are likely to engage in intense sexual intercourse or who have pre-existing damage to their genitals from intercourse.
Revealing the case in a medical report, they add that people should be aware of the “potential risks” of the erectile dysfunction drug.
About 8,000 men in the US suffer a penile injury each year, with penile fractures and penetrative trauma being the most common.

The last patient was treated in Türkiye and his case was revealed in the journal Radiology Case Reports.
The man claimed he had taken Viagra for his erectile dysfunction before having “prolonged and vigorous” sex with his partner.
He was officially diagnosed with Mondor disease of the penis, when the veins become inflamed and cause swelling. The injury usually appears within a few hours of prolonged sexual intercourse and causes immune cells to rush to the site of the injury.

This inflammation causes the vein to become swollen and painful. It also increases the chance of blood clotting.
The man was diagnosed after an ultrasound and was given blood thinners and anti-inflammatories and told to abstain from sex for a few weeks.
In the report, his doctors said: “While Mondor disease of the penis is not usually life-threatening, it can significantly affect the patient’s quality of life.” Therefore, physicians should remain alert to the potential risks of long-term use of sildenafil.
“Additional predisposing factors, such as vascular injury caused by sexual activity, should be considered in the treatment and prevention of this condition.”
