“Did you know you can eat the skin of a kiwi?” began registered dietitian Mickala, who also uses the username @seasaltandkale. TikTok and Instagram.

‘Not only can you eat the skin of the kiwi: you should.

‘Kiwi alone is an excellent source of nutrients, such as vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, folate, potassium and calcium.

‘But when you also consume the kiwi skin, you significantly increase your nutrient intake.

“When you eat a whole kiwi you’re not only increasing your intake of nutrients like fiber, folate and vitamin E, you’re actually increasing the fiber content by a whopping 50 percent,” she explained.

‘So if you’re lacking fiber in your diet, you should definitely try eating a whole kiwi.

‘Some research suggests that eating two kiwis a day helps promote regular bowel movements, even for those suffering from IBS, meaning it could also be a great natural alternative to laxatives.’

She added that if you are bothered by the “texture and fuzziness” of a standard green kiwi, a gold or yellow kiwi might be suitable alternatives.

“Your skin is much softer and will continue to provide you with those benefits,” she explained.

While kiwi is associated with New Zealand and generates more than $1 billion in revenue for the country annually, the fruit actually originated in China, according to Time.com.

Kiwi seeds are believed to have first arrived in New Zealand from China sometime in the early 20th century.

They were initially known as “gooseberries” before being renamed about half a century later and began to skyrocket in popularity in the 1970s.
