Chiefs reportedly waiving WR Kadarius Toney ahead of deadline after rough 2023 season

Kadarius Toney’s time with the Kansas City Chiefs is over.

The Chiefs waived Toney Tuesday afternoon before the NFL roster deadline. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Toney appeared in 13 games for the Chiefs last season but recorded just 169 yards and a single touchdown on 27 receptions. The Chiefs acquired Toney for the first time during the 2022 season in a deal with the New York Giants, who selected him with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 draft out of Florida.

Last season with the Chiefs, Toney made several high-profile mistakes. He dropped several passes, including one that was later intercepted for a touchdown in a one-point loss to the Detroit Lions in their season opener and another on the final offensive drive of that game. He also scored the winning touchdown after catching a lateral pass from tight end Travis Kelce in their game against the Buffalo Bills last fall, but the play was nullified after he was ruled offside, leading to the Chiefs losing that game.

The following week, Toney also suffered an interception off a deflection, marking his final game of the year with the Chiefs. He did not play at all during the Super Bowl run, and the Chiefs declined to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract earlier this offseason.

Toney also feuded with the Chiefs on social media during their championship run last season. He was ruled out for several games with a hip injury, but Toney said in a brief Instagram Live video that the Chiefs were lying about his injuries. Head coach Andy Reid denied those claims and Toney later backtracked.

It’s unclear where Toney will land next, or if he’ll find a new team before the start of the season. The 25-year-old has 760 receiving yards and three total touchdowns in his three seasons in the league.

The Chiefs, fresh off of two consecutive Super Bowl wins, will open their season against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.
