A head-on collision in Melbourne’s north has caused chaos for commuters during the morning rush hour.

Two cars collided near College Crescent in Parkville at 6am on Thursday.

All westbound lanes along Cemetery Road were momentarily closed before reopening an hour later.

Traffic has backed up on the Eastern Highway and drivers have been warned to expect delays of up to 40 minutes.

Motorists have been advised to use Flemington Road and Grattan Street to divert towards Parkville.

Alternative routes have been marked as Nicholson Street to the south or Brunswick Road to the north.
