President Joe Biden gave a blistering speech Tuesday, demanding that Republicans choose America and democracy over Russia and dictatorship when it came to voting on a bill that would provide $60 billion to Ukraine.
But first I had to make something clear.
“Before we begin, I’m going to make this statement… I’m going to let it stand alone,” he told about 30 reporters behind the cameras in the White House State Dining Room.
‘I’m not going to accept any questions, but I’ll ask them tomorrow and the next day.
“I don’t want anything to get in the way of this statement… to be very direct about it.”
Joe Biden took the campaign to the White House on Tuesday, calling former President Donald Trump a “fool” while advocating for more aid for Ukraine.
Once he finished his written speech, Biden closed his folder and turned to his left, leaving the State Dining Room without answering any questions shouted by reporters.
It was a sign of the importance Biden attributed to the speech, essentially laying out how the nation was at a “tipping point” as a general election approached that would likely pit Biden against his predecessor Donald Trump.
But it was also a reminder of how the president had failed five days earlier.
At the time, he made a powerful defense of himself and his mental fitness, criticizing a report by special prosecutor Robert Hur that suggested his memory was failing.
Biden channeled all his anger toward the journalists in front of him, expressing his fury at the idea, reported by Hur, of not remembering the date of his beloved son Beau’s death.
It was a powerful and impressive performance until the moment it stopped being so.
After apparently finishing the question-and-answer portion of the appearance, he headed toward the door before being tempted to return to answer one more question about Israel.
All the headlines focused on what came next, the moment he referred to ‘Mexican President El-Sisi’. In fact, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is the president of Egypt.
A hastily arranged press conference to respond to what he said was a “free” report had backfired.
On Tuesday, he made sure that didn’t happen by finishing his written comments, closing his folder and heading straight for the door.
Biden launched a blistering attack on his predecessor Donald Trump for encouraging Russia to attack NATO allies, while urging Republicans to back a spending bill to help Ukraine.
It meant that the headline, which called his predecessor Trump “foolish” and “shameful” for encouraging Russia to attack NATO allies, could be doubted.
And he urged Republicans to back a spending bill that would send $60 billion to Ukraine, saying his opponents were playing into “Putin’s hands.”
“Are you going to support Ukraine or are you going to support Putin?” he said in an impassioned speech. “Or are you going to support America… or Trump?”
His speech came hours after the Senate approved a long-sought $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. He is certain to face stiff opposition in the Republican-controlled House.
Biden used the issue to criticize Trump for undermining the founding principle of NATO, when the former president said he would not want to protect allies from a future attack by Russia if they had not met their defense spending commitments.
In fact, he told a crowd the story of how he apparently told another world leader that he would encourage Russia to “do whatever it wanted” to countries that didn’t meet their goals.
Biden said Republicans needed to decide which side they were on: Ukraine or Vladimir Putin (pictured), the United States or Trump.
Special prosecutor Robert Hur spent a year investigating files found in President Joe Biden’s home and former office. He said Biden’s status as president meant he could not be prosecuted.
The result was the discontent of NATO members and the fury of Biden.
“No other president in history has ever bowed to a Russian dictator,” he said.
‘Let me say this as clearly as I can. I will never do it. For the love of God. It is foolish. “It’s shameful, it’s dangerous.”
Trump is the favorite to be the Republican candidate in this year’s elections. And Biden told his audience that the nation was at a “turning point.”
“I can’t imagine any other president walking away,” he said. “As long as I am president, if Putin attacks a NATO ally, the United States will defend every inch of NATO territory.”
He said Trump’s comments were “un-American.” And he noted that the only time NATO invoked Article 5 of its self-defense clause (an armed attack against one or more of its members will be considered an attack against all members) was after the 9/11 attacks. the United States
Biden also used the speech to tell the American public that the security bill would create jobs in the country.
