The Ubud district (pictured with the red dot) on the tourist island of Bali has been hit by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake.

The Ubud district on the tourist island of Bali was hit by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake at 9.52am local time, which was 11.52am on the east coast of Australia.

The quake, which occurred 10 kilometres northeast of Ubud, was classified as magnitude 4.8 by the US Geological Survey, at a depth of 35 kilometres.

But local reports and a Thai earthquake monitoring group said it was 5.1.

Around 1.2 million Australians visited Bali, part of Indonesia, last year, marking the highest number of tourist visitors ever.

Last May, residents and travelers in Bali woke up to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

“I woke up with the bed shaking,” one traveler wrote at the time, while another said “I was scared to death.”

Others, however, said they heard nothing and “slept through the whole thing.”

That earthquake originated in the Indian Ocean, 97 kilometers southwest of South Lombok.
