Arne Slot has challenged Liverpool players and fans to show the rest of Europe why their absence from the Champions League last season was a blow to the entire continent.

The Reds have won seven of eight games under the Dutchman and high-profile European nights return to Anfield on Wednesday with the visit of Bologna, Italy’s second opponent this season after a 3-1 win at the San Siro against the AC Milan.

Liverpool spent last season in the Europa League wilderness, losing to eventual winners Atalanta in the quarter-finals. But they are back in the top table and Slot is relishing the opportunity to witness a Champions League night under the Anfield lights.
