Arne Slot has challenged Liverpool players and fans to show the rest of Europe why their absence from the Champions League last season was a blow to the entire continent.
The Reds have won seven of eight games under the Dutchman and high-profile European nights return to Anfield on Wednesday with the visit of Bologna, Italy’s second opponent this season after a 3-1 win at the San Siro against the AC Milan.
Liverpool spent last season in the Europa League wilderness, losing to eventual winners Atalanta in the quarter-finals. But they are back in the top table and Slot is relishing the opportunity to witness a Champions League night under the Anfield lights.
“I am privileged to have worked at Feyenoord with Champions League nights last season,” said the 46-year-old. ‘People tell me that it will be even more special here.

“What I expect from my players is that, after missing the Champions League for a year, when they come out tomorrow I want to see this and feel it.” Like, ‘Oh, we missed this.’ They have to be prepared.
“I want the same from the fans, I hope they feel this desire to show Europe again: ‘You missed us because of this.'” That combination should lead to a very special night for everyone involved.’
Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has missed two training sessions with a foot problem suffered against Wolves but should at least be fine to make the squad, although new signing Federico Chiesa has a minor problem and will miss out. Andy Robertson is fine after taking a knock on Saturday.
