Ange Postecoglou delivered brutal home truths to those connected with Tottenham after becoming outraged by the fight over how to approach the defeat to Manchester City.
The Australian suggested Spurs need a major mentality change if they are to close the gap between themselves and the country’s elite, including City, who are one win away from securing an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Postecoglou appeared to exchange words with a supporter in his technical area during the 2-0 defeat, sealed by two Erling Haaland goals either side of a flagrant miss by Heung-min Son.
And the 58-year-old believes the build-up to City’s visit, the rivalry with Arsenal dominating thoughts across the club, has shed light on the problems he faces as a manager.
Outraged by the attitude towards the match, as some Spurs fans openly said they hoped their own team would lose to prevent Arsenal from winning their first title in two decades.
Ange Postecoglou was furious after Tottenham were beaten by Manchester City on Tuesday and took aim at his own supporters.
The Australian even confronted a Tottenham fan in the stands during the match.
Postecoglou criticized his club in his post-match press conference for having “quite fragile foundations”
“The last 48 hours have revealed that the foundations are quite fragile,” Postecoglou said.
”It just means I have to go back to the drawing board with some things. It’s outside (the club), inside, everywhere. “It has been an interesting exercise.”
Tottenham fans chanted: “Are you watching Arsenal?” after Haaland’s first goal in the 51st minute.
‘I’m not interested friend. I just don’t care,” Postecoglou added. ‘It’s just my observations mate. I’m not going to tell you because it’s for me.
‘I’m the one who has to do it. You can make your own evaluations of what happened.
‘I probably misinterpreted the situation in terms of what I think is important in their effort to become a winning team, but that’s okay. That is why I am here.’
Postecoglou declined the invitation to divulge the exact areas he needs to fix to move into a second season in charge, suggesting he has misunderstood what fans want.
Asked if his complaints were related to the rivalry with Arsenal, he said: “I’m just not interested, mate.” Maybe I’m out of tune, but I don’t care, I just want to win.
Some Tottenham fans even recreated City’s famous celebration in Poznan after the visiting team scored their first goal.
Erling Haaland scored two goals and Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League table
The defeat to City ensured that Tottenham will not qualify for a place in next season’s Champions League
“I want to be successful at this football club, that’s why they brought me in. So what other people, how they want to feel and what their priorities are, doesn’t interest me at all.
‘I know what is important to build a winning team, that’s what I need to focus on.
‘I can’t dictate what people do. They (the fans) are allowed to express themselves however they want. But yes, when we have late winners in games it is because the public helped us.
“I already know what I want to do, I just have to make some adjustments in the way I do it.”
