In an interview with indianexpress.comImtiaz Ali said that the film is a love story between Chamkila and his music album. He said, “I feel that this film or Chamkila’s life is in a way a love story between Chamkila and music. Here is a man who at one point was so afraid of the warnings he was receiving that he actually broke down and cried and feared he was going to be killed. From then on, a few years later, knowing full well that if he continued singing in live performances he might be shot, he still chose to sing.”
