PARIS — Léon Marchand once again lit up the Paris Olympics with a stunning final 50 meters in the 200-meter butterfly on Wednesday and a thrilling victory over Hungarian star Kristof Milak.
Marchand came out of the race slowly and was 0.64 seconds behind Milak, the world record holder, in the 50 meters. At the halfway point he was 0.60 seconds behind. In the 150 meters he was 0.74 seconds behind, and it didn’t seem like enough amid a grueling four-day stretch that included an unprecedented double on Wednesday night.
But he overtook Milak in the final stretch of the pool and won in an Olympic record time of 1:51.21.
