The second week of winter will see a powerful cold front hit much of southeastern Australia, causing frosty mornings and low temperatures (pictured, travelers in Sydney).

Temperatures are expected to plummet when a polar blast hits Australia this weekend.

A strong cold front will hit much of southeastern Australia, leading to frosty mornings and significantly lower temperatures.

Weatherzone meteorologist Quincy Tut told Daily Mail Australia the rain would persist throughout the weekend.

“A low pressure system that has brought rain in recent days has moved offshore and rain activity is expected to begin from this afternoon,” he said.

Rain will begin to fall over Victoria on Friday morning before the system moves into New South Wales and then Brisbane on Saturday.

“A southerly gust associated with a deepening trough over Tasmania will begin to move towards the coast,” Tut said on Friday.

“From this afternoon, rain will persist across most of New South Wales.”

Rainfall is expected to ease on Sunday afternoon as the low pressure system moves further out to sea, but temperatures will remain frigid.

Tut said temperatures in Victoria were trending one to two degrees below average June high temperatures.

Temperatures are also slightly below average in New South Wales.

Sydney

There is a strong chance of between 5mm and 15mm of rain in Sydney from late afternoon into Friday night, with temperatures reaching a high of 17C.

Morning showers are also forecast for Saturday, especially along the coast, with a temperature range between 11C and 17C, however, showers should ease by Sunday.

The cold front brings decent snowfall to alpine resorts after an unfavorable ski season opening. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts between 5 and 20 cm.

Sydney has already received almost double the average June rainfall in just two weeks, and the rain is forecast to continue this weekend.

Heavier falls of 30mm to 40mm are expected in the metropolitan area and the Hunter region of New South Wales.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 18C and lows of 7C this weekend.

A high chance of rain of between 5 and 15mm is expected for Sydney from afternoon to evening, with highs of 17C on Friday (pictured, people are soaked in Melbourne)
