A dog owner was left with a £3,000 pre-Christmas bill after her dog swallowed a hook and fishing line while swimming in the sea.
Pip, 11, a “greedy little terrier”, was paddling on Pakefield beach in Suffolk when he swallowed the “snack”.
She was rushed to the vet, where she had an “extremely difficult” operation to remove the hook, which had pierced her oesophagus, before her throat was re-stitched.
Owner Sally Renaut, whose mother had to step in to cover the unexpected expense just before Christmas, said: “The worst part was seeing her with the fishing line hanging out of her mouth and knowing there was nothing she could do.”
It comes after a series of similar canine conundrums have occurred in recent years, including when an elderly Bichon Frize swallowed 133 coins.
Charlie was taken to Thameswood Veterinary Clinic in Swindon, Wiltshire, by his worried owners because he appeared to be ill.
They were told the 13-year-old dog had stopped defecating and lost his appetite.
They suspected he might have eaten a plastic art decoration, but veterinarians were shocked to discover he had consumed more than a hundred coins.

Veterinarian Matheus, who led the surgical team, was surprised to find the large amount of cash in the dog’s stomach.
In December of last year, another hungry pet also let his appetite get the best of him and scoffed an entire box of Celebrations, including the wrappers.
Owner Erin Lewis, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, rushed to the vet with her Cocker Spaniel, Mow, after the pup managed to climb onto the counter and devour the entire box.
In 2020, it was Alfie, a ten-year-old giant schnauzer, who made a poor diet decision thinking that 26 golf balls, plus rubber gloves, a ball of string and several pieces of wood would make a good meal.leaving its owner with a £2,500 note.
And earlier this year, Ruby, a little Patterdale Terrier and Jack Russell cross, needed a £2,000 operation to have a popsicle stick removed from her stomach after eating a whole Magnum ice cream “like a pelican”.
Shelley Coupland’s two-year-old daughter Sophie Baile was enjoying a milk chocolate Magnum at home on July 16 when she lowered her arm to the floor.
Ruby immediately grabbed the treat and gobbled it down “in a second.”
Mrs Coupland, from Sleaford, Lincolnshire, said: “She just took the whole thing and swallowed it like a pelican eating a fish, she just ate it whole.”
‘It is the most expensive ice cream I have ever bought and will ever buy.
“We didn’t have a second to get up and take the stick away from him, so he swallowed it all.
“She must have seen an opportunity and taken it because normally she is quite placid and well-behaved.”
