The BJP demands Arvind Kejriwal to resign

New Delhi:

Punjab Chief Minister Harjot Singh Bains and Somnath Bharti were among the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members detained by Delhi Police today while protesting against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest in the liquor policy case.

Several AAP leaders and workers – including women – were seen being pushed and dragged into the buses taking them to various police stations in the national capital.

While the Aam Aadmi Party had today declared a ‘gherao’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, the BJP is organizing a mega march to demand Mr Kejriwal’s resignation, calling his ‘work from jail’ scheme a sham .

Delhi Police has beefed up security along the roads leading to the Prime Minister’s residence. For safety reasons, some metro stations are also closed today, officials said.

Police said the AAP members were not allowed to protest.

“There is no permission to protest. We have also received information that protesters will gather at Patel Chowk Metro station. In view of this, we have intensified security measures,” said Devesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi.

The BJP is demanding that Arvind Kejriwal resign as chief minister after his arrest. The AAP, however, insists that Mr Kejriwal will remain the Chief Minister of Delhi even if it means functioning from prison.

A protest was also organized by the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday, in which representatives of the INDIA bloc also participated. At a joint press meet, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai said there is anger among the people over the manner in which Mr Kejriwal was arrested.

The INDIA Opposition Bloc has announced a mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday to protest against the arrest of Mr Kejriwal.

The Aam Aadmi Party chief was arrested on Thursday and the next day, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court had sent him to Probe Agency custody till March 28.
