The Block auction: Teams have ‘stopped talking’ to winners Omar and Oz

Sharon Johal has spoken about the strained relations between the teams on The Block.

In Sunday’s nerve-wracking auction, Omar Slaimankhel and Ozman ‘Oz’ Malik scored record profits, while two other couples walked away empty-handed after passing their homes.

Sharon, who failed to sell the Gisborne property she renovated with her husband Ankur Dogra, said: the Herald Sun ‘nobody’ spoke to ‘the guys’ after they wiped the floor with the competition.

Sharon Johal of The Block told the Herald Sun that “nobody” from the show spoke to “the boys” Omar Slaimankhel and Ozman “Oz” Malik after they wiped the floor with the competition

“No one else really talks to the guys and hasn’t been in a while,” she said, adding that she and Ankur are the exception as they are still “friends with all the couples.”

The former Neighbors star addressed the teams’ relations after the show after Tom Calleja and Sarah-Jane Wilson, who were making just $20,000 a day in profit, said they weren’t interested in being friends with Sharon and Ankur.

She said the comment was “quite unnecessary and nasty.”

“No one else really talks to the guys and hasn’t been in a while,” she said, adding that she and her husband Ankur Dogra are the exception as they are “friends with all couples.”

Sharon also shed light on Tom and Sarah-Jane’s confidence heading into auction day, saying they thought they would “really win the whole thing.”

“As favourites, even in airtime, they were definitely pushed as favorites all season and won a lot of rooms. That was the biggest shock of the day,” she said.

Sharon is lucky to have passed her house this past weekend as that means they can have a “better result” as a private sale going forward.

It comes after Scott Cam, host of The Block, hinted that there could be an investigation into what happened on auction day after two “identical” homes sold for completely different prices.

All five homes went under the hammer in Gisborne on Saturday: One inexplicably sold for a $1.6 million blockbuster, another made just under $170,000, a third barely reached its reserve, and two homes came in without a sale.

These unusual results left the cast and crew ‘stunned’, with Cam narrating the radio show Fitzy & Wippa on Monday he is still looking for answers.

Scott Cam (left, with Dylan and Jenny) has hinted that there could be an investigation into what happened on auction day after ‘two identical’ homes sold for completely different prices

When asked why there was such a discrepancy in sales prices, Cam replied, “I don’t know. That’s what I said last night at the close when we signed off on the show.

“I said, ‘If anyone can explain to me what happened to me, I’d love to hear it.’ And that’s true. Everyone, the crew, the cameraman, the producers, were all stunned.’

“One joint costs $5.6 million, and the next joint costs $4.1 million, and they’re virtually identical,” he added, referring to Omar and Oz’s winning property and Tom and Sarah’s third home. -Jane, what a profit of only $20,000.

Cam praised Tom and Sarah-Jane’s gracious response to the bad news, saying, “They were stoic, they were actually incredible, and they weren’t angry.

“They just said, ‘It is what it is.’ You know what Sarah-Jane said to me: “We’ll just pay off our mortgage like everyone else.”‘

Block buyers’ attorney Frank Valentic, of Melbourne-based Advantage Property Consulting, also commented on the odd auction result.

‘[It] was a result that was out of the box. I think [Adrian Portelli, one of the bidders on Omar and Oz’s home] was also a friend of the owners,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

“It was a bit of a bizarre result. He obviously had the money to buy it but he pushed Danny too [Wallis, the winning bidder] way beyond what those properties were worth.’

A spokesperson for Nine said: The Sydney Morning Herald‘The Block final was a public auction under the rules, and everyone is welcome to bid’ – and Daily Mail Australia suggests no otherwise.

Nine made an estimated $19 million in profit from the auction of The Block, which took place in the Macedon Ranges on Saturday and aired on the show Sunday night.

The network paid $11 million last year for the 28-hectare plot, which was divided into seven lots, five of which were allocated to participants, reports the Australian.

The reserves for each house were over $4 million, and Cam’s own reno will likely be sold at a later date. It is believed Nine will earn $30 million if the entire lot is sold.

Omar and Oz were crowned winners, selling their property for $5,666,666 and taking home a record $1.6 million in prize money.

The western Sydney partners earned the largest sum of all five Block houses, far exceeding the $4.08 million reserve.

Ryan and Rachel Carr came in second, selling their home for a profit of $169,000.

But there was also heartache for two couples, Ankur and Sharon, and Jenny Heath and Dylan Adams, who failed to sell their homes at auction.

Their properties were passed on when they failed to attract a bidder on the reserve, with both houses reaching just $4,075,000.

The couples continued to negotiate with their highest bidders after filming.

It was the first time a Block property had not been sold at auction since season four in 2011, when two teams’ homes were passed.

Tom Calleja and Sarah-Jane Wilson didn’t fare much better, with their house making a profit of just $20,000, forcing them to sell their car to make up for lost income.
