A terrified schoolboy was shot in a herd of 22 bullets by armed men who thought they were taking part in a horrific gang initiation in South Africa.

Aswin Jonas, 12, was hit 11 times by the two attackers who are thought to have killed him for nothing more than passing a rite of passage to earn club colors.

His Pastor Vincent Alexander family told the Daily Voice that grade 5 primary school student was the innocent victim of a random gang-related attack in Parow, Cape Town.

The youngster was part of a group that guarded cars in the Elsies River mosque for those worshipers who were praying in prayer at 9.15 pm on Friday when he was murdered.

South African police spokesman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed: & A 39-year-old boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds in his body and he died as a result of his injuries.

& # 39; A case of murder has been opened and a team of police detectives is following some strong clues and the circumstances of the murder are being investigated. & # 39;

A witness told the Daily Voice that the Jonas family were traumatized & # 39; was by his death and that Aswin was being chased by two men who shot him & # 39; until their guns were empty & # 39 ;.

He said a group of seven to twelve year old boys guarded cars in the mosque, while Muslims prayed inside when two men opened fire and ran their victims to safety inside the gates.

But he died after being hit 11 times in just a few frightening seconds in a pool of blood on the sidewalk.

The youngster was part of a group that guarded cars at the Elsies River mosque because those worshipers were praying inside at 9:25 pm on Friday.

Pastor Alexander was quoted by the Daily Voice as: & # 39; From what we have heard, the shooting may have been part of a gang initiation. It is nauseous and I hope the authorities grab them.

& # 39; The gangs let these guys go out and shoot random people and as long as they kill and they talk about it, they can join the gang. Police detectives are hunting for his killers.

& # 39; I knew Aswin as part of my youth program that I followed after school and the boy was innocent and neither he nor his family have ties to the gangs in the area.

& # 39; This is a great tragedy, especially as Aswin, one of the poorer children in our community, was trying to become something out of a modest family and working hard & # 39 ;, he said.

About 20,000 people – an average of 52 a day – are brutally murdered every year in South Africa and are now rated as one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
