Salt Lake City has officially submitted its application file to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.
The file was approved by the SLC-UT board of directors on February 22. The city’s bid to host the games comes as it was named the International Olympic Committee’s preferred and sole candidate for the event.
An official bid presentation ceremony was held virtually in Salt Lake City on Thursday with Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
“It’s official: we have just submitted our bid to host the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to the International Olympic Committee,” Cox wrote in X.
‘Thank you to everyone who worked hard to get us to this point. Utah is the State of Sports and we look forward to bringing the Olympic Games back to the Beehive State!’
On Thursday, Salt Lake City submitted its official bid file to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.
If approved, the city will host the games six years after the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Executive Director of the Salt Lake City – Utah Committee (SLC-UT) for the Games, Fraser Bullock, called the bid a “monumental step.”
If the city gets the green light to host, it will be its first Winter Olympics since 2002. It would also come six years after the Summer Olympics return to the United States in Los Angeles.
While confident the bid will get the necessary votes, American IOC member and IOC Vice President Anita DeFrantz cautioned that “it’s not a done deal.”
To add to the amount of work left to do, United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee President Gene Sykes weighed in after joining the ceremony. He said IOC officials “are not satisfied but excited to have a partnership with the team (SLC-UT).”
The English version of the main file contains two maps, 14 tables, and 30,947 words. Meanwhile, the detailed annex spans 343 pages and contains six maps, 18 studies and reports, 26 site plans and 52 spreadsheets.
IOC Future Host Commission team to conduct site assessments in Utah April 9-13
Complete documents for Salt Lake City and the 2030 games in the French Alps were due Thursday. Both applications were selected as preferred candidates by the IOC Executive Board in November, and the remaining steps were considered with due diligence before obtaining the seal of approval in July.
The IOC Prospective Host Commission team is scheduled to conduct site assessments in Utah from April 9 to 13. The Executive Board will then likely recommend candidacy for full membership during its quarterly meeting June 12-14.
If recommended, the SLC-UT candidacy can be presented to all voting members of the IOC in the second half of June. The final presentation and election of IOC members is expected on July 24 during the Summer Olympics in Paris. The hosting contract will be signed immediately afterwards.
The SLC-UT has called for elections on July 24 to combine with Pioneer Day celebrations in Utah.
