Police have arrested a 27-year-old salesman for stealing jewelery worth Rs 1.05 crore from a shop in Maharashtra’s Thane city, an official said on Sunday.
The accused, Rahul Jayantilal Mehta, who led a lavish lifestyle funded by his thefts, was arrested from Mira Road area on March 26 when he came to meet his girlfriend, said Abhay Mahajan, senior inspector of Naupada police station.
The owner of the jewelery shop, located in Talao Pali area, approached the police on March 25 in connection with the theft, following which an FIR was registered against the accused under Section 408 of the Indian Penal Code (criminal breach of trust by registrar or servant).
The suspect, who was responsible for monitoring sales at the store, allegedly stole 70 pieces of jewelery weighing a total of 1.59 kg and worth around Rs 1,05,55,766 between November 2023 and March 2024, the suspect said. official.
The suspect had been absent from work since March 8, 2024 and was reported missing by his wife on March 15.
According to the investigation, he traveled to neighboring Mumbai, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and other places to avoid capture, the official said.
Police received a tip-off that he was planning to meet his girlfriend in the Mira Road area here on March 26.
Based on this information, police kept an eye on the suspect when he got there, the official said.
After interrogating the man, police learned he led a lavish lifestyle funded by the money he collected from the thefts, including frequent visits to pubs and five-star hotels, he said.
So far, 900 grams of jewellery, costing around Rs 62.10 lakh, has been recovered from the suspect, police said.
