Four persons were killed and at least 70 people injured when a storm devastated parts of northern West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Sunday, officials said.

Several houses were damaged, trees uprooted and electricity poles toppled, while strong winds destroyed most parts of the district headquarters and many areas in neighboring Mainaguri, they said.

Among the worst affected areas were Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga and Saptibari, they said.

The deceased were identified as Dijendra Narayan Sarkar (52) from Senpara, Anima Burman (45) from Paharpur, Jagen Roy (72) from Putimari and Samar Roy (64) from Rajarhat, they added.

“A rescue operation is underway,” a disaster management official said.

Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy told PTI that several people were hospitalized with injuries.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said civil administration, police and disaster management personnel have been deployed for relief efforts.

Rapid response teams (QRTs) have also been deployed and the affected people were shifted to safer places, she said.

“Sad to know that sudden heavy rains and gusty winds have caused disasters in some areas of Jalpaiguri-Maynaguri this afternoon, causing loss of lives, injuries, damage to houses, uprooting of trees and electricity poles etc,” she wrote on X.

“The district administration will provide compensation to the bereaved families in the case of the dead and the injured as per the rules and as per the MCC (model code of conduct),” she added.

Banerjee stated that she was with the affected families and assured them that the government would provide all kinds of assistance.
