A quiet Sunday stroll turned into a dramatic rescue after a man crashed through two fences and ended up in a backyard pool.

Residents of the property on Byron Terrace in Redlynch, Cairns, sprang into action after the white Lexus SUV crashed into their swimming pool shortly before 11am on Sunday.

The car drove into the backyard of one property before crashing through the fence of another until it landed in the pool and slowly filled with water.

A resident rushed to smash one of the car’s windows with a hammer and dragged the driver, a 61-year-old man from nearby Palm Cove, to safety.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and transported the driver to Cairns Hospital for treatment.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services sent two crews to the scene after being asked to attend by police.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing.

A resident of nearby Norfolk Circuit, who asked to remain anonymous, said he saw the car “speeding” down Heritage Street before crashing into his home.

The venue was grateful there were no injuries, but told the Cairns Post it “would have been a very different scenario” if it had happened after school hours.

He said the man appeared to have had a medical episode while driving and was unconscious as he was being removed from the car.

“Then he woke up and I asked him, ‘Are you OK?’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I’m fine,'” she said.

Queensland Police said the driver was unhurt after being examined in hospital.

A spokesman added: “We were called after a car crashed into a fence and ended up in a swimming pool; the driver was able to escape the vehicle and was uninjured.”
