Newcastle have made a deadline-day approach to sign Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga, Mail Sport understands.

Eddie Howe has had a relatively quiet summer despite his side’s considerable financial power, and enquired about a possible deal with Elanga on the final day of the transfer window.

However, Forest are understood to be in no rush to let the 22-year-old leave the club, particularly given the lack of time to bring in a suitable replacement.

The Swedish international joined Nuno Espirito Santo’s side from Manchester United last summer and has four years remaining on his current contract.

In his first campaign at the City Ground, Elanga scored five times in 35 Premier League appearances.

The Magpies’ long-running pursuit of Marc Guehi ultimately ended in failure after Crystal Palace rejected a bid said to be in the region of £65million.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Howe admitted the window has not gone according to plan for his team.

“It’s a difficult period, there’s no doubt about that. We haven’t had the window of opportunity that we wanted to have, that can’t be denied.

“I’m not going to sit here and say it’s been a brilliant transfer window for us. I think everyone will look at me and think I’m not sure I’m telling the truth.

“But my job is to continue giving my best for the players we have here.”
