The widow, who appealed for help on GoFundMe, wrote: “My name is Sarah Allwright. I am the wife of Martin Allwright.

‘Martin was the victim of a brutal attack on August 12, 2024. He was hit in the back of the head with a sharp gardening tool.

‘He underwent brain surgery and was hospitalized for a week, but sadly passed away on Monday, August 19.

‘I have hired a criminal lawyer to punish the man who did this.

‘The fees for this will be at least 18,000 Euros. I had to pay the initial payment of 9,000 Euros this week.

“I’m asking for help with this because the cost is very high for me. It’s something I never thought I would have to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”

Thanking supporters, Sarah added: ‘Thank you so much for the donations so far.

‘Martin had lots of friends and was always ready to laugh.

‘His great passion was Exeter Chiefs rugby and it will be sad if he cannot see the start of the new season with me.’

Sarah’s Calling had raised over €5,000 of a €9,000 target at the time of writing.

Earlier this month, a local police spokesman said detectives had solved the case and it is now in the hands of a local court.

Sources close to the investigation said a man believed to be the neighbour was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the attack shortly after 1am on August 12.

He now faces a new, more serious charge of murder.

It was not immediately clear today whether the dispute over the dog believed to have sparked the violent attack was related to the noise the animal was making or was caused by something else.

Zurgena, which has a population of just under 3,000, is located in the Almanzora Valley near the towns of Albox, Huércal-Overa and Los Carasoles.

It is located 40 minutes by car from the tourist centers of Mojácar and Vera and approximately an hour and a half from the provincial capital, Almería.
