A suspected motorcycle robber was shot dead after he attempted to rob an off-duty police officer and his wife on Saturday in São Paulo, Brazil.

An armed robber riding a motorcycle was shot dead by an off-duty police officer in São Paulo, Brazil, after trying to mug him on the street.

The 21-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, approached the 28-year-old São Paulo State Military Police officer and his wife as they got out of a car in front of her mother’s house on Saturday, according to reports.

A surveillance camera showed the suspect pointing his gun at the officer before being shot and falling from his bike.

The suspect stumbles as he tries to regain his balance, while the officer continues to shoot him.

Paramedics treated the suspect at the scene and rushed him to Saboya Hospital, where he died from gunshot wounds.

“The weapons of the police officer and the suspect were seized and sent for forensic analysis,” the São Paulo Department of Public Security said in a statement.

‘The case was registered as resistance, death by police intervention and attempted robbery by the DHPP (Department of Homicide and Personal Protection) which opened a police investigation to look into the events. The Military Police is following up on the investigation.’

The latest crime data report released by the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat showed that 101,130 robberies were recorded in the first six months of 2024.

Data shows 17,661 robberies were committed in January, before the figure fell to 16,453 in February and rose again to 17,883 in March. Authorities documented 17,002 robberies in April, before incidents fell to 16,501 in May and then fell to 15,630 in June.

Data on reported thefts in July have not yet been published.

A total of 228,028 robberies were reported in 2023, including 116,523 in the first six months.
