Sci-fi classic Matrix will receive a fifth part, Warners Bros announced on Wednesday. The film is directed by Drew Goddard, known for writing films like The Clover Field, World War Z And The Martian. Former co-director-writer Lana Wachowski serves as executive producer. Plot details are still under wraps and it’s still unclear if the original cast will return, Deadline reported. “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, both by honoring what Lana and Lilly started more than 25 years ago, and by unique perspective based on his own love for the series and its characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, director of production at Warners Bros, in a statement.
The original Matrix trilogy was directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowskis. The franchise started in 1999 and became an instant critical and commercial hit. It was followed by sequels Reloaded the matrix (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).
Only Lana returned to make a fourth film, The Matrix Resurrectionsin 2021. The original films starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, Laurence Fishburne played Morpheus and Carrie-Anne Moss played Trinity and Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith.
The story revolved around a dystopian world where people are unknowingly trapped in a simulated reality created by intelligent machines that use this to distract them and use their bodies for energy.
Jessica Henwick, Erendira Ibarra and Priyanka Chopra were the new cast members in the 2021 edition.
