Man, 22, is shot by & # 39; member of a youth gang from Fresno, California & # 39; at his own birthday party
A Californian man was shot at his own 22nd birthday party in the early hours of Sunday morning after five gang members went up in the air and then opened fire.
Fresno police chief, Jerry Dyer, said the bulldog gang members … went inside and started barking, so victim Nicholas Polin asked them to leave.
The boys – all probably juveniles – did make an exit but returned 10 minutes later and one took out a gun, which was fired into the ceiling.
In the 2.30am incident, Polin heroically tried to wrestle the suspect in the midst of the chaos at the gathering of about 60 people on East Pico Ave.
Nicholas Polin, 22, was shot at his own birthday party on Sunday in Fresno, California
Five & # 39; bulldog gang members & # 39; came to a house without Pico Avenue but were asked to leave. They left and came back 10 minutes later when a young person fired a gun at the ceiling
Polin bravely tackled the suspect, who then shot in his direction. Partygoers grabbed the shooter and hit him, causing him head injury
However, the shooter was able to pull away and reacted by shooting laps in Polin.
Several other partygoers attacked the attacker and & # 39; physically abused him repeatedly & # 39; but he was able to flee.
However, a person who believes law enforcement is responsible was detained shortly thereafter and it was the head trauma that helped them make the link.
At 3.45 a call was made about a 16-year-old Spanish man who had arrived at the Saint Agnes Medical Center with serious head wounds.
& # 39; We believe this 16-year-old was at the party, shot Nicholas Polin and was beaten several times on the head and needed medical treatment, & # 39 ;, said Chief Dyer at a press conference on Sunday.
The chief said that the male suspect might have been hit with an object or a bottle to get such injuries.
The suspect was able to break free and flee the scene of the 2.30 am incident
But police think they caught the armed man – a 16-year-old boy – at the Saint Agnes hospital shortly after he came in with a head trauma and a phone call was sent to the ward
& # 39; We believe it was this 16-year-old at the party who shot Nicholas Polin and was beaten several times on the head, requiring medical treatment, & # 39 ;, said Chief Jerry Dyer.
He was treated, detained by law enforcement officers and is at headquarters while the police are actively working.
Relatives asked for financial help with the funeral on Sunday via a GoFundMe page
It is unclear why the gang came home, but the police said it was possible that they knew someone at the party or heard about it through social media.
Fresno police thought they had arrived to harm someone.
& # 39; We are dealing with individuals with a different mentality. They would not have a firearm unless they intended to use it, & Dyer continued. & # 39; They really don't care about the result. & # 39;
He noted that the department has seen children aged 13 and over who have been recruited by 16 or 17 year olds and said that the age for recruiting basic groups is getting younger and younger.
In addition, those entering gangs in the city are influenced by the people around them and even by their families, Dyer warned that Fresno Police has a big brother / big sister program to reach these children at an early age & # 39 ;.
& # 39; Everyone tries to reach the youth before they are led into a gang life, because as soon as they do, we see what they do, & # 39; Dyer added.
His sister Shayna described the victim as & # 39; a beautiful, pure, spirited young man & # 39 ;.
Relatives asked for financial help through one GoFundMe page on Sunday.
The crowdfunding page description was: & # 39; This unexpected tragedy has affected the family and many others, all we ask is for any type of charity donation to cover the costs of nikos funeral. Thank you all, he will be missed a lot, we love you Niko. & # 39;
Polin's devastating cousin, Desiree Torres, also shared a message on social media: & # 39; This doesn't hurt so much that you don't deserve this nico you where the sweetest person I know knows I will always love you forever cuzzin I am so f ** king have hurt rite now. & # 39;
Polin's cousin, Sabrina, said the victim was always there for her.
& # 39; He was not only my cousin, he was my brother and best friend. He has always been by my side since the first day. He was my right hand and I was his, & Sabrina posted online alongside a photo of them together. & # 39; I want to wake up tomorrow, open my door and hear him snoring in the room opposite mine. I want that more than anything in this world, but I will never get that feeling again.
& # 39; He showed a lot of love to be done like this and taken so quickly. We walked this earth next to each other until I noticed this morning that I was walking alone. & # 39;
