Former President Jimmy Carter has revealed that he hopes to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris in November.

The 99-year-old shared his final wish from the Georgia home where he is receiving end-of-life care.

“I’m just trying to get there to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter told his son Chip, his grandson Jason Carter told the Constitution of the Atlanta Journal newspaper.

Carter will turn 100 on Oct. 1, days before Harris faces Donald Trump in the presidential election.

In recent days, Jason Carter said his grandfather has become “more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza.”

He had previously said the 39th president was “no longer awake every day” while receiving palliative care.

Carter remains hopeful, however, that he will be able to go to the polls. Early voting in Georgetown begins on October 15, two weeks after the former president’s birthday.

The Democrat is the oldest living former president, having served from 1977 to 1981.

His family announced that he had been placed in hospice care in February 2023, and many assumed that meant he was close to death.

He has been receiving hospice care at his Plains home for 17 months, including while grieving the death of his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn.

The former president was last seen at her funeral in Georgia in November last year.

Rosalynn Carter died on November 19 at the age of 96. She and Carter were the longest-serving presidential couple.

They met when the former president was just three years old and Rosalynn was a newborn, and celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary on July 7, 2023.

The couple shared a lifetime together and their romance stood the test of time, as well as the challenges of Navy deployments, a presidential campaign and his subsequent term in office.

After his presidency, Jimmy devoted himself entirely to his wife.

Together they carried out humanitarian projects and helped build or renovate more than 4,300 affordable homes around the world – one of the largest charitable achievements of any previous president.
