Melvin Odoom has revealed he almost quit I’m A Celebrity… days before becoming the fourth contestant to be eliminated after the “toughest night” of his 18 days.
Viewers saw the BBC Radio 1 presenter, 44, burst into tears after he was forced to sleep in the Bush Telegraph cabin after his sleeping bag became soaked in torrential rain overnight.
He told MailOnline: “I thought about quitting because I found it difficult and I thought the finish line seemed quite far away at the time, but no, because I didn’t want to let my family down.”
“I was the first one off Strictly, and I was aware of that in my head because I let people down when I did that.”
Much of Melvin’s ordeal was not shown on camera, but he has now revealed what happened that night, in which he was rescued by camp security after calling for help in the middle of the night.
He told MailOnline: ‘I woke up one night and I was literally covered like I was soaked. I had my mic on and I said, ‘Guys, I’m wet, help’ and those guys were on it.
Melvin Odoom, 44, has revealed he came close to quitting I’m A Celebrity… days before becoming the fourth contestant to be eliminated after the ‘toughest night’ of his 18 days.

He told MailOnline: “I thought about quitting because I found it difficult and I thought the finish line seemed quite far away at the time, but no, because I didn’t want to let my family down.”
‘Suddenly, a fully covered security guard came out of the bushes, like a commando, with a light on his head and said, ‘Mel, are you okay?’ Come with me.’
‘He would have charged me if I had asked him to. But he pulled me out of the hammock and told me to go to the Bush Telegraph.
“There was this amazing guy, Chris, who asked me if I was okay and I said, ‘No, I’m cold and I can’t sleep.'”
The ITV team gave him dry clothes and put Melvin into two sleeping bags before asking him if he wanted to stay and leaving him sleeping in the cabin.
This was not shown during the show, but Melvin was seen leaving the cabin and breaking down, he said: “I cry in romantic comedies, but I felt embarrassed because you have people like Coleen, who didn’t shed a tear and she has little ones and I It was difficult to be in that environment and feel that way.’
Detailing how all his campmates responded, Melvin revealed that Maura Higgins, 33, gave him a tissue, Barry McGuigan, 63, gave him a fatherly hug, Danny Jones, 38, made Melvin’s bed and Oti Mabuse, 34, sat with him.
Commenting on his lack of airtime, Melvin said: “I thought it was pretty quiet in camp because there were so many big characters and entertaining people, so I assumed they would be very important on the show.
“Sometimes I thought he was very quiet, so I didn’t think he would be that big of a deal on the show anyway.”

But one element that did give Melvin airtime was his show of love for Countdown star Carol Vorderman, 63, after her luxury item was a pillow with her face on it.
The radio presenter revealed he was going to message the TV presenter on Instagram asking him out on a date after both I’m A Celeb contestants and fans shared their wish for the two to be together.
‘I think she’s sexy, I think Carol Vorderman is hot. There was pressure when Tulisa and Oti were trying to get me to ask her out and now it seems like everyone is trying to make up the date.
Asked if he had gone on the ITV show in part to get Carol’s attention, he said: “Maybe, maybe, I knew she was a fan of the show, she’s been on it twice, maybe it would be something she see.”
“I think it’s worth sending him a message and seeing what he thinks about a date. I’m going to have a lot of friends to help me with that message.”
